Key takeaway
Fengyue Tavern is AI-tavern style character-card roleplay on AI Fengyue: a character card defines the persona and speaking style, a lorebook adds background, and you and the AI take turns advancing the story. Beginners can start with ready-made cards before creating their own.
"Fengyue Tavern" is what users commonly call roleplay on AI Fengyue. It borrows well-established concepts from AI taverns such as the open-source SillyTavern: each AI character is defined by a "character card", complex background knowledge goes into a "lorebook", and the user and character advance the story together line by line.
Unlike open-source taverns that you must deploy and configure yourself, Fengyue Tavern runs directly in the AI Fengyue web app. Just open fyue.app — no server or API key needed.
Three core concepts of Fengyue Tavern
Understand these three concepts and you understand most of Fengyue Tavern:
| Concept | Purpose | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Character card | Defines who the character is: appearance, personality, verbal habits, relationship to the user | "Lin Wan, 26, bookshop owner, speaks gently and likes quoting poetry" |
| Opening line | The character's first line, which sets the scene and tone | "It's pouring now — want to come in for a bit? I just made tea." |
| Lorebook | Keyword-triggered background notes for places, factions and rules | When "Star Harbor" is mentioned, it adds "Star Harbor is a trading city floating above the clouds" |
Getting started: 6 steps for your first Fengyue Tavern session
- Open fyue.app and log in.
- Go to Explore and pick a well-reviewed, clearly described ready-made character card.
- Read the character description and opening line to understand the story background and your role.
- Choose an AI model. Pick a more literary model for refined prose or a fast one for quick back-and-forth; check each model's description.
- Reply by describing actions and surroundings, for example with actions in parentheses: "(Lowers the umbrella and shakes the rain off my shoulders) Thanks, sorry to intrude."
- Once you are comfortable, try creating your own character card and writing a simple lorebook for it.
How Fengyue Tavern differs from ordinary AI chat
Ordinary AI chat is more like Q&A: you ask, the AI answers. Fengyue Tavern is co-creation: the AI plays a character with a fixed personality, you play another character in the story, and every line from either side moves the plot. That is why how clearly the character card is written, and how much context your replies give, directly affect the AI's performance.
AI Fengyue also lets you set works as private or public. You can polish a character card privately and share it publicly once you are happy with it.
Example of a solid character card
Here is a simplified example — follow the structure and swap in your own character:
Name: Shen Qing. Role: owner of a watch repair shop in the old town, 28. Personality: quiet, attentive, tough on the outside but soft-hearted. Speaking style: short sentences, occasional watchmaking metaphors such as "When time runs slow, people should pause too." Relationship to the user: the user is a regular customer who brings in a pocket watch for repair. Restrictions: does not volunteer anything about her past unless the user asks repeatedly.
Then add a vivid opening line and start testing. If the AI drifts out of character, revise the character card first rather than correcting it over and over in chat.
Common misconceptions
Myth 1: "Longer settings are better." Overly long settings take up context and push out recent dialogue. Clearly state the key personality and speaking style, and put background material in a lorebook to be triggered when needed.
Myth 2: "A lorebook is permanent memory." Lorebook entries are only used when their keywords appear and are also limited by context length. They are on-demand reminders, not permanent memory.
Myth 3: "Everything the AI says is true." Roleplay content is AI-generated fiction and may contradict itself or contain errors — enjoy it as a story.
Safety reminder
Safety reminder: never enter real ID numbers, home addresses, bank cards or payment passwords in chats. Only access the platform via fyue.app and never download or install unofficial "cracked" or "no-login" versions. AI-generated content can be wrong — do not treat it as professional advice.
